I’m trying to complete the steering damper on a 1937 Cotton with Druid forks, I have everything except the rod down the centre, looking at pictures there seems to be a nut inside recess in damper knob, which is threaded,is there anything else apart from the rod threaded both ends, thanks for any help David Roper

I am also looking for the same. There was one for Webb forks at Paul Powell’s auto jumble yesterday. The knob at the top and spindle are fairly straight forward. However, the “pull” has to pass the lower spindle on the bottom of the fork s before continuing to the friction pad just below. The is done with an oval piece of metal that goes around the lower spindle. You have to remove the spindle to fit or remove this oval piece. I believe this damper is not much more than an ornament regarding handling. Whereas the side dampers are much more critical. I think I’ll probably make one from scratch. If I come across 2 I’ll let you know! Good luck Paul

Hello Paul, I do have the part as you say that goes around the bottom spindle which is threaded to take the rod,I bought that at a jumble and also the bottom plate that attaches to the frame, they were both from Norton 16H,the plate needed to be adapted a bit and the piece around spindle needed a small amount turned off the OD, I made the other plate and then with the 2 fibre discs it was complete.I have the damper knob then as you say it’s probably just a rod threaded both ends down the centre.

I’ve found a breakdown diagram of the damper parts from the 16H,not sure how to add it to the message,it shows the damper rod with a long thread at the top with a nut screwed down to support a spring which preloads the damper knob when it’s adjusted

That is useful information, thanks. This is an odd site to use. I think if you click on the 3 tiny dots top right, you get some options ie a paper clip that allows you to attach things. My temporary top damper knob I think is off an old Silvercross pram. Thanks again Paul
