Top (third) gear wont stay engaged

Finally took the 250 Python (2V) on the road . Started first kick but wouldn't go into third. Adjusted the linkage to the limit and gets into third but immediately slips out.

The screw on the pawl spring in the bottom is fully screwed in.

CottonJo is dropping by tomorrow and may have an answer but I fear the box has to come off and be stripped again. Filled with semi fluid grease as per other thread on this forum. Any insights welcome, have tried searching via Google without luck.

I think I found the problem. Bush in final drive gear not pressed home!

Keen not to have to strip the box again so won't rush to reassemble it.

Well the gear box has been apart about 3 times but I think I have finally sorted it. I had not removed the main bearing but finally realised that it should have a retaining clip. managed to make one from an undersize circle expanded in a 3 jaw chuck and reduced in thickness.

Just need to get some miles done to build confidence.

Well done Nick, your persistence got you there in the end. Often it is a simple cause easily overlooked. Maybe ride to the rally this year!
