Many thanks Bob, that is really useful. Its not too difficult to make something like that. I can do some vague scaling from your photos, which will be good enough.

So I took on John's project and left the best bit til last, the chain guards/case!! Very tempted to do something quite minimal as posted in this thread that just protects my ankles and avoids too much grease on my jeans and the ease of access to the chains and clutch is appealing. Not had luck finding a case like Alan did.

Alan Freke wrote an article in Pickins awhile back about making a bespoke primary/dynamo chaincase for his 250 CottonPython. I own it now. Will dig it out. Paul

Hi Paul. Chris sent me that article in two mags assuming it is about the one pictured in this thread using a chain case of something else and a bit of tool box.

Made something temporary last night. Can make a dome to protect ankle from the clutch nuts.

Not beautiful but should protect ankles. I assume I can use low fling chain lube such as WD40 motorcycle chain lube and divert the breather into a trap? I knew that the skills making the copper ash tray in school metalwork would come in handy one day! Wish I got the Eazy Rizer bike lift at the start, it is brilliant. Didn't have room for a hydraulic bench but for me this is so much more useful.

Hi Nick, Another bit of masterful engineering. Your bike is unique, just like all the other prewar Cottons. I have drilled a 2mm hole in my primary guard to allow chain lubrication. I have worn out 2 primary chains since owning my Cotton. The old school recommend soaking in Linklife, this is a messy job. One thing you may notice is that having taken care to adjust the primary chain correctly, after just a few rides it can become tight. More torque on the primary than the main chain. Paul

Thanks Paul but doesn't look that masterful up close. Thick paint will help!
I'll try new school chain lubes to try and minimise mess! This won't be my tourer bike.
Had similar issue with Panther and chain tension. Ended up making a sprung Tufnol tensioner which allowed a slack chain without rattle.
